Repair or Replace? An Honest Answer

Not every laptop is worth fixing — and we'll always tell you when it isn't. Here's roughly how we think about it.

Usually Worth Repairing

If the laptop is under six years old, the rest of it is working well (battery still holds a charge, no overheating, no other faults piling up), and the repair cost is significantly less than buying a sensible replacement — repair almost always wins. An older laptop with an SSD upgrade and a fresh battery often feels new again for a fraction of the cost of a new machine.

Probably Not Worth It

If the laptop is eight or more years old and has other ageing problems (hinges loose, battery flat, keyboard wearing out, struggles with modern software), the repair cost is approaching half the price of a sensible replacement, or the fault is a motherboard issue on an already tired machine — that's usually the point where a new laptop makes more sense. We'll say so even though it costs us the job.

Diagnosis is always free. If we look at your laptop and recommend replacement, you pay nothing. Honest "don't repair this" advice is part of what you're paying for.

The cost depends on the make and model of your laptop. Our labour is charged at the Advanced Support rate of £49.99 per hour, plus the cost of the replacement screen. We’ll give you a full quote before going ahead so there are no surprises.

We work on most major brands including HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, and more. If you have a Mac or a less common brand, give us a call and we’ll let you know if we can help.

Is it worth upgrading my laptop or should I replace it?
